Why Paris Saint-Germain Exercised the Buy Option in Gonçalo Ramos’s Loan Deal to Sign the 22-Year-Old Versatile Striker Permanently?

Why Paris Saint-Germain Exercised the Buy Option in Gonçalo Ramos’s Loan Deal to Sign the 22-Year-Old Versatile Striker Permanently?

As the final international break in the calendar year of 2023 came to a close, two-time defending French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have decided to up their game in the European club football community by turning forward Gonçalo Ramos’s loan deal from the Portuguese Primeira Liga’s S.L. Benfica into a permanent signing just yesterday. The details of the 22-year-old Portugal forward’s latest contract showed that Paris Saint-Germain have paid S.L. Benfica a total of €80 million (A fixed of €65 million plus add-ons worth €15 million) for Ramos, keeping the player at the 11-time French champions until the end of the 2027/2028 Season.

What Made Paris Saint-Germain to Sign Ramos on a Lucrative Deal?

A €80-million deal for a 22-year-old forward is considered luxurious even by the standards of Paris Saint-Germain, who have a huge monetary support by the Qatar Sports Investments, especially when the player currently only has two goals and a assist in 15 appearances in all competitions for his new club under his belt. So what makes the French outfit to turn Ramos’s deal into a permanent one based on such mediocre performance thus far?

The move by Paris Saint-Germain is certainly a risky one, considering the 22-year-old has to compete with another new signing Randal Kolo Muani for the starting no. 9 role in Luis Enrique‘s squad, not to mention the Frenchman, alongside fellow new PSG player Ousmane Dembélé, also have a better chemistry with the leading player of the club and France captain Kylian Mbappé, having played together with each other in the national team for many years already.

Paris Saint-Germain are currently the top team in the French Ligue 1 table after eight wins, three draws and a loss in 12 Matchdays, and they are sitting second in the Group of Death of this season’s UEFA Champions League with two wins and two losses each. One can only imagine that the French outfit’s move to keep Ramos at the club permanently until the summer of 2028 are due to several possible reasons, such as to prepare for a rainy day if Mbappé leaves the club and that there are hardly any available young and promising talents in the market at the moment.
