Outlook

Coming to Denver marks the first major preseason showing for the Spurs, having had a relatively tame training period, at least in comparison to their Premier League counterparts.

While this has been dubbed a friendly, it’s the Spurs’ only trip outside of England for the offseason, and the MLS squad has been known to get feisty in these games, especially last year’s match vs. Bayern Munich.

Two key players for the MLS squad are former Spurs, in Robbie Keane and Clint Dempsey. Keane is one of the most prolific forwards in Tottenham history, scoring 122 times in 303 games with the team. Dempsey had a much shorter run, only one season, but he did score seven goals in his 29 appearances. This will also mark the first time that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will suit up for the MLS All-Stars, having recently joined the Galaxy of Los Angeles.

It’ll be interesting to see if Gerrard and Frank Lampard get much playing time, considering neither has kicked a ball in MLS action. Their selections caused a bit of controversy among plenty of players who wished that guys who were more traditional MLS All-Stars had been added to the squad.
