Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea Overcome Newcastle United in a 5-Goal Premier League Thriller

Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea Overcome Newcastle United in a 5-Goal Premier League Thriller

Not playing in Europe this season and still in the bottom half of the English Premier League table in 2023/2024 thus far, Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea have not been able to live up to their expectations in terms of returning to the summit of European club football and English top-flight football competitions. The Blues were scheduled to host last season’s Top Four side Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, and thanks to some of the most emphatic tallies you will ever see in the five-goal Premier League thriller, Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea managed to edge past their opponents on a 3-2 score line, allowing them to move within one point off the top half of the league table.

Pochettino’s Chelsea Went Back and Forth with Howe’s Newcastle

Pochettino’s Chelsea drew first blood as early as the opening sixth minute, when Cole Palmer shot was cleverly flicked into the back of the net by Nicolas Jackson inside the penalty box. The goal was the young Senegalese striker’s 12th goal in 31 matches in all competitions for Pochettino’s Chelsea in 2023/2024, while Palmer, arguably the best player for Pochettino’s Chelsea this season, was able to collect his 11th assist in 36 games in all tournaments.

Pochettino’s Chelsea almost took the 1-0 lead into the following 45 minutes, until the visiting Newcastle United equalised before the half-time break. A Chelsea player was dispossessed in his own half, allowing Eddie Howe’s men to break forward. Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães managed to find Alexander Isak just outside the penalty box, followed by the Sweden international finding the bottom right corner to make things all square again prior to the restart.

Pochettino’s half-time team talk for the Blues as well as several changes certainly worked their magic in the second half, as they went on to regain their one-goal lead and bag all 3 points in this English Premier League fixture. In the 57th minute, a rather relax man marking by the Magpies during a throw-in saw Palmer receive the ball at the edge of the penalty box, and the England attacker was not shy to let the ball fly, finishing the shot in the bottom right corner of the goal with his left foot. The strike was the 21-year-old’s 15th goal of the 2023/2024 Season.

Ukrainian Mudryk Won It in Style for Pochettino’s Chelsea

Pochettino’s Chelsea decided to switch things up by replacing former Manchester City player Raheem Sterling with Mykhailo Mudryk, and that substitution in the 71st minute gave an instant influence in the next few moments of the game. During a counterattack by Pochettino’s Chelsea, the Ukrainian charged into the penalty box and beat two defenders on his way to the six-yard box. He then rounded the goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka and slotted home Pochettino’s Chelsea’s third goal of the evening with ease to cap off moments of sheer individual brilliance.

Howe’s Newcastle United did pull one back when another replacement Jacob Murphy smashed the ball into the Chelsea goal with superb power late in the game, but that was as far as the Magpies could go in this match, as Pochettino’s Chelsea triumphed in the game on a 3-2 score, thus moving them a point adrift the 10th place of the league table with another game in hand.

Pochettino’s Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal have recently eclipsed both Liverpool and Manchester City to the top spot of the English Premier League table following their 2-1 victory against Brentford at home and the 1-1 stalemate between Jürgen Klopp’s men and Pep Guardiola’s three-time defending English champions squad at Anfield on the same day. For the first time since Christmas last year, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners will be the best team in the English top-flight football, as they currently have goal difference and point difference advantages over the Reds and Cityzens respectively. Coaches’ Verdicts on the Chelsea-Newcastle Clash

After the league encounter between Pochettino’s Chelsea and Howe’s Newcastle, the Blues head coach noted: “It was a very good goal and that is what we expect from a player from the bench – impact. Then it is about competing with different players in his (Mudryk) position. Then he will deserve to. We need to understand that we are Chelsea. We are in a project that is completely different. Some people might be confused. When people don’t want to listen, it’s difficult. But we are trying to explain we are a different Chelsea, we are building something different. It’s going to be tough. We need to keep believing, even when it’s tough circumstances.”

“We played (The Carabao Cup) final, 120 minutes, then after three days we play the FA Cup and we play Brentford. In six days we played three very tough games, nearly with the same team. It was really tough. If that means we are a disaster, OK. The most important thing is it’s not affecting the team. They know what they need to do and we keep believing. The win today is important for our fans to be a little bit more calm. But I think if we don’t win our next game, it’s going to be again a problem. That is Chelsea,” continued the ex-RCD Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain manager.

Pochettino’s counterpart at the losing end Howe, also went onto the post-match conference to offer his thoughts over the game: “I thought it was a game in the balance and an open game. The game got away from us with the goals we conceded which were really poor from our perspective – they were self-induced. Wherever you play you have to pride yourself on being tight and I don’t think Chelsea had an abundance of chances tonight. But the way the goals came from our perspective is hugely frustrating as we know the details have to get better.”
