Super Sunday: Newcastle vs Liverpool for Matchday 3 of the 2023/2024 English Premier League Season

Super Sunday: Newcastle vs Liverpool for Matchday 3 of the 2023/2024 English Premier League Season

In recent years, Newcastle vs Liverpool has been a much-anticipated fixture that spectators circle on their English Premier League calendar. The battle between these two clubs is further elevated to new heights, when the Magpies received huge monetary support via their new oil-rich and Saudi-based owner Public Investment Fund while Liverpool being the last team to have toppled Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for the league title. That being said, fans from both clubs will not have to wait long for the said exciting fixture, as Newcastle vs Liverpool is the heavyweight match in Matchday 3 of the English Premier League this season, with a Super Sunday kickoff time that is set to conclude this weekend’s league matches.

Super Sunday Fixture: Newcastle vs Liverpool

Eddie Howe’s side started the new Premier League season off in style after they trashed Aston Villa 5-1 at home for the opening fixture, but prior to this Newcastle vs Liverpool match, his team were succumbed to a 1-0 narrow defeat to three-time defending champion Manchester City, placing the Magpies in eighth place after two matches. On the other hand, Liverpool, who were forced to a 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Matchday 1, bounced off in their second game with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth despite being a man down, and they will be boosted with the services of £55-million new summer signing Alexis Mac Allister, after the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner from had his red card successfully appealed.

If we turn the pages of history, recent records have shown that Jürgen Klopp’s men will be heading to this Newcastle vs Liverpool game as favourites, since Newcastle United have not been able to collect all three points against their Merseyside opponents in their last 13 Premier League games (Drew 4, lost 9). Furthermore, it is worth to point out that the last two times Magpies had back-to-back losses in the Premier League, they were defeated by both Manchester City and Liverpool during the losing streaks.

All these statistics certainly do not favour Eddie Howe’s team, who are determined to retain their UEFA Champions League spot or even challenge for domestic league and cup glories by the end of this season, meaning Magpies will have to dig deep if they wish to improve their head-to-head record in this Newcastle vs Liverpool fixture and replicate their last win over the Reds (2-0) back in December 2015.

Al-Ittihad to Go All Out for Mohamed Salah

If anything is going to spoil the mood of the unbeaten Reds in this Newcastle vs Liverpool match, it is that defending Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad wanting to go all out and signing Liverpool’s Egyptian star Mohamed Salah before the transfer deadline closes (1/9 for the English Premier League and 7/9 for the Saudi Pro League). The 31-year-old three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, who signed an extension last summer, has two years remaining in his current Liverpool contract and Al-Ittihad would like to have the Egypt captain’s services to defeat other big-spending Saudi clubs like Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr and Neymar’s Al-Hilal in their league title defence in 2023/2024.

Al-Ittihad, home to ex-European club football stars such as Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kanté, Fabinho (Salah’s former Liverpool teammate), Jota, etc., had made Salah the top target of their transfer list this window, and it is reported that the transfer rumours have been spurred due to head coach Nuno Espírito Santo’s comments on Benzema and Jota do not fit into his football style at the Saudi region. Further reports have indicated that the attacking pair might be plotting for outgoing transfers away from Al-Ittihad despite only joining them earlier this summer.
