Kalvin Phillips: Newcastle Drop Out of Race as Multiple Clubs Eager to Get the 28-Year-Old England Star

Kalvin Phillips: Newcastle Drop Out of Race as Multiple Clubs Eager to Get the 28-Year-Old England Star

Manchester City may have thrived in the 2022/2023 Season by winning only the second ever continental treble to by an English club and their third successful English Premier League title, but Kalvin Phillips, the 28-year-old England international and midfielder, certainly cannot say that he is happy with the Cityzens since his transfer to the Blue Half of Manchester back at the start of the previous season. The former Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips is currently one of the hottest figures in January 2023’s winter transfer window with multiple clubs, including that of fellow Premier League teams and even an Italian outfit, are showing immense interests to earn the player’s signature.

Kalvin Phillips Wanted by Crystal Palace, Everton, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Juventus

The 28-year-old English player only made 21 appearances in all competitions for the treble-winning Manchester City last season since joining Pep Guardiola’s side after his eight-season spell with Leeds. The numbers do not seem to have taken a better turn in 2023/2024 at all, since he has only registered 10 games in all tournaments for the Cityzens with half a season already gone thus far. Hence, Kalvin Phillips’ exit from the English champions is imminent, and Premier League outfits such as Crystal Palace, Everton, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Juventus are desperate to win the player’s heart this transfer window.

With a direct permanent transfer usually not probable in a winter transfer window, Kalvin Phillips’s transfer plan this month is likely to be a loan deal with a buyout clause. In regard to this, Eddie Howe’s Magpies have reportedly dropped out the race to sign the Leeds-born Kalvin Phillips, since the team that finished fourth in last season’s English top-flight football viewed the player’s loan fee as being too lucrative, especially during this time of the year.

Newcastle’s decision to not sign Kalvin Phillips on loan will open up opportunities for the player to play for other clubs in the near future, and amongst the rest of the three English contenders who have openings to get the player, Kalvin Phillips’s preferred option should be the Hammers, who are currently sixth in the Premier League table after 20 games; It would be unlikely for Kalvin Phillips to join a bottom-half team like Eagles or Toffees for the remainder of the season, and since the midfielder has spent his entire senior club career at England, it is definitely not possible that he would want to leave England to join Juventus on loan despite the Italian outfit’s recent unbeaten streak.

Kalvin Phillips’s Professional Senior Career Thus Far

In additional to his 31 games in all competitions for Manchester City over two seasons, the 28-year-old Kalvin Phillips has represented Leeds United at the senior stage for the huge part of his professional career. After graduated from the Leeds United academy in 2014, Kalvin Phillips went on to play 234 games for the Whites, scoring 14 goals and assisting 15 times as a defensive midfielder as a result; His most successful accolade with his hometown and boyhood club is the EFL Championship Leeds United won back in the 2019/2020 Season, an honour that saw them promote to the English Premier League in the following year.

At international level, Kalvin Phillips has been England boss Gareth Southgate’s primary option at the central defensive midfield duties in recent years, especially during the 2020 UEFA European Championship, where the Three Lions eventually beaten on penalties by Italy after the full 120 minutes plus added time. Having said that, with limited playing time being observed at Manchester City as compared to his tenure with Leeds United, Kalvin Phillips is eager to have regular minutes for the rest of the 2023/2024 Season, especially when the 2024 UEFA European Championship Finals at Germany are just months away.
