After a dominant display on Wednesday by defending Carabao Cup champions Manchester United, many expected Thursday to follow the same scenario with City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool playing against quote-on-quote weaker oppositions than them. However, City was the only team of the four that failed to follow the script, as they joined Aston Villa in exiting the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup against Premier League opposition.

Newcastle Exact Revenge as Manchester City Fall in Round 3
The only way to improve on a treble-winning season is to win a quadruple, which no team has ever achieved. However, Newcastle has other plans for Pep Guardiola as they followed up their 8-0 win against Sheffield United with a controlled 1-0 win against his weakened squad. Despite the team consisting of the red-hot Julián Álvarez and a solid backline of Gvardiol, Akanji and Aké, the citizens failed to pose a threat as they succumbed to an easy tap-in from Isak.
This third-round defeat means Manchester City have achieved an unwanted record of exiting the Carabao Cup at the third stage for the first time since arriving in the Premier League. Furthermore, this is the third year in a row that City are now contesting a final after winning the competition four seasons consecutively from 2017/18 to 2020/2021.
On the other hand, Newcastle has completely shaken off the form that saw them lose three games on the spin before the International break as they hope to end their 68-year-long wait for a major domestic trophy. With an achievement of handing last season’s treble winners their first long this season, who is to say Newcastle would not carry the momentum all the way to the trophy?

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool Join United in the Next Round
While Manchester City crashed out, fellow Big Six teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool won their respective matches and progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. To many people’s surprise, Chelsea somehow scored a goal in September and won a game in 2023 as their new signing, Nicolas Jackson, scored the only goal in the Chelsea-Brighton match.
However, the win was not without any repercussions as the captain on the day, Ben Chilwell, seemed to succumb to yet another injury while Jackson left Stamford Bridge wearing a splint on his wrist. With Reece James, Fofana, Lavia and Nkunku still out injured, this is a long season for Chelsea. Furthermore, Chelsea may have a Sancho incident off the pitch as Pochettino dismissed news of Madueke’s injury and said it was his choice not to include him in the squad.
Elsewhere, Arsenal and Liverpool continue to impress with wins against Brentford and former miracle runners Leicester City. While Arsenal relied on Reiss Nelson’s goal and a solid goalkeeping display from Aaron Ramsdale, Gakpo, Szoboszlai and Jota completed the comeback for Liverpool after conceding in just three minutes.

Carabao Cup Fourth-Round Draw
With the tournament favourites Manchester City crashing out, the Carabao Cup looks up for grabs for any team. As for the fourth-round draw, there seem to be two mouth-watering features we could look forward to. Before we get into the two specific matches, we attached a list of the matches of the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
- Mansfield vs. Port Vale
- Ipswich vs. Fulham
- Manchester United vs. Newcastle
- Bournemouth vs. Liverpool
- Chelsea vs. Blackburn
- West Ham vs. Arsenal
- Everton vs. Burnley
- Exeter vs. Middlesbrough
If you did not spot it already, the two most prized matchup for the fourth round is Manchester United hosting Newcastle and West Ham hosting Liverpool. After just beating the better side of Manchester, Newcastle are hoping to remove the other Manchester team as they travel to Old Trafford next month. On the other hand, West Ham will welcome former skipper Declan Rice back home as they host Arsenal. Hopefully, the England midfielder has recovered from injury by then and received a standing ovation from both teams.
