Captain Trippier Bags Hat Trick of Assists in Newcastle’s Jubilant 8-0 Win Away to Sheffield United

Captain Trippier Bags Hat Trick of Assists in Newcastle’s Jubilant 8-0 Win Away to Sheffield United

After captaining his side to a resilient draw against Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday, Kieran Trippier stepped up once again as he delivered three pinpoint crosses to the head of his teammates en route to their 8-0 demolition of Sheffield United. While it was more of a team effort from the Magpies as they became the first side to have 8 different scorers in a game, the influence of Kieran Trippier could be felt throughout the pitch as he delivered a sublime performance and deservingly got his MOTM award.

Newcastle Equal Their Biggest Premier League Win

The day began quickly for Newcastle at Bramall Lane as Callum Wilson threatened the Sheffield United goal in just 7 minutes. After the unfortunate injury of Harvey Barnes, his substitute Anthony Gordon came on and assisted Longstaff for the Magpie’s first goal. Then, Trippier demonstrated his crossing prowess twice from set pieces by setting up Burn and Botman for Newcastle’s second and third.

However, this was just the start of the nightmare for the Blades as Wilson, Gordon, Almirón, Guimarães, and Isak added their name to the scoresheet, marking their largest-ever defeat in league history in what was their 4,988th game. Newcastle, on the other hand, tied their own league record they set in 1999/2000 as they demolished a different Sheffield team, Sheffield Wednesday, 8-0 at home.

Furthermore, Newcastle recorded their biggest-ever away victory in the competition and became the first team in Premier League history to have 8 different scorers in a game. It is a weekend worth celebrating for the Geordies after their disastrous 3-game-losing streak before the International Break.

Kieran Trippier Becomes the Second-Ever Player to Assist Three-Headed Goals in One Game

The Geordies may have something more to celebrate as their captain, Kieran Trippier, became the second-ever player to assist three-headed goals in one game since Jason Puncheon achieved the feat against West Ham in 2015.

Moreover, Trippier is also the first Newcastle player to provide three or more assists in a single league game since Allan Saint-Maximin did so in 2020 against Bournemouth.

Furthermore, Kieran Trippier also achieved a career-first feat of assisting thrice in a match. To put into perspective, Trippier had never before managed to supply a hat-trick of assists in a single game in his 157 games in the Premier League. However, records are made to be broken, and with one under his belt, he should aim at equalling or even breaking Dennis Bergkamp’s four assists in one match record set in 1999.

Eddie Howe’s Official Post-Match Statement: “This Was a Return to Our Very Best.”

While it is understandable for managers to be overzealous after achieving such a feat, Eddie Howe was humble in his post-match conference. “We respect Sheffield United and Paul Heckingbottom but just had to do our thing. We were not aware of anything (Records) during the game. It was just a case of trying to push and keep looking to score, to keep that desire and mentality that we want in every game. After such a difficult week physically and emotionally, it was great to see that not affect us.”

When asked if he was expecting such a dominant display after their lacklustre showing against AC Milan, Eddie Howe replied: “This was a return to our very best. But I never doubted us as we have got outstanding players. We have had some very tough fixtures, but today, we were ruthless and kept looking to score.”

However, there was some sour news from the Magpies as Eddie Howe talked about the injury sustained by Harvey Barnes. “It does not look too good. I think he has a toe problem. He pushed off and felt something in his toe. Early signs are there is probably an injury, but we do not know what it is currently.”

Should Kieran Trippier Start as Right-Back for England?

Since joining the Magpies, Trippier has established himself as a prominent defender and contributor with solid defending and pinpoint deliveries. While he may not get the credit of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James or Kyle Walker from a delivery, 1v1 defending and pace standpoint, Tripper seems to have a solid unison of the three and may be the best right-back for England heading forward.

What do you think? Should Kieran Tripper start as right-back for England, or will you still value Kyle Walker ahead of him?
