Prior to his exit as the AS Roma manager, the Special One racked up 68 wins in a total of 138 games in all tournaments for the Italian club, that is, a win rate of 49.28%. José Mourinho may have the worst ever win percentage in his managerial career with AS Roma, the Portuguese did lead the side to win the inaugural trophy in the 2021/2022 UEFA Conference League, putting an end to a trophyless run of more than 14 years. Furthermore, José Mourinho’s AS Roma was one win away from their second European club football title in as many years, if it was not Sevilla FC who defeated them in the finale of the 2022/2023 UEFA Europa League.

Club Legend Daniele De Rossi Appointed AS Roma Head Coach Until 30th June 2024

On the replacement of José Mourinho as the manager of AS Roma, the Italian Serie A side appointed former player and skipper Daniele De Rossi as a temporary head coach until the end of this 2023/2024 Season. The 40-year-old De Rossi have made 616 appearances in all competitions over 18 seasons for AS Roma and captained the Italian outfit for two years before his move to Boca Juniors at the Argentine Primera División for his final playing year back in the 2019/2020 Season.

“We are happy to be able to hand over the managerial role of AS Roma to Daniele De Rossi, as we feel that the leadership and ambition that have always defined him can prove decisive in achieving the team’s objectives until the end of the season. We were aware of Daniele’s unbreakable bond with the club, but his enthusiasm for accepting the position for the next few months convinced us even more of his ability to be a guide for the players and a proud representative of the club’s values. Welcome home, Daniele,” said Dan and Ryan Friedkin on the appointment De Rossi of as a temporary head coach.

De Rossi, who will lead AS Roma to meet Hellas Verona FC at home on Saturday, echoed the spirits of his owners: “I would like to thank the Friedkin family for entrusting me with the responsibility of Roma’s head coach role. From my side, I know no other way but dedication, daily sacrifices, and giving everything I have in order to face the challenges that await us from now until the end of the season. However, the work that awaits us all has already taken precedence. We have no time or choice but to be competitive, fight for our goals, and try to achieve them, which are the only priorities my staff and I have set for ourselves.”

Where Will José Mourinho Head to Next?

Since AS Roma have now parted ways with José Mourinho and appointed former club captain De Rossi as the new manager, it will be interesting to see which football club or country will the Portuguese go to next in his managerial career. In this regard to this, one of the possible destinations for the Special One is to remain at Italy to manage another domestic powerhouses there, such as the likes of 2022/2023 Italian Serie A winners SSC Napoli.

On the other hand, should José Mourinho decide to leave the country for good, other options could be the Saudi Pro League, which the Portuguese had already expressed his interests to join earlier last year, or even a return to the English Premier League to coach a quality side namely Newcastle United. It is also worth mentioning that José Mourinho, who has yet to manage an international team, may finally take a different approach in his managerial career in leading his national side Portugal to the great glory at European and world stages, alongside five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
