FA Cup Third Round: Liverpool Leave It Late to Overcome Arsenal 2-0

FA Cup Third Round: Liverpool Leave It Late to Overcome Arsenal 2-0

The FA Cup Third Round had the heavyweight clash between two English Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates in store for every football football fan in England and the world, and it was the current leaders of the English top-flight football who showed their supremacy in this domestic cup against their rivals Arsenal. Jürgen Klopp’s Kop strike twice late in the second half to win this cup tie against Mikel Arteta’s men with a comfortable 2-0 score line, allowing the eight-time winners in the oldest football competition in the world to progress to the next round.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool: The Most Look-Forward-To Game in the FA Cup Third Round

This FA Cup Third Round clash of Arteta’s Gunners versus Klopp’s Reds was a rematch of the Premier League fixture that happened more than a fortnight ago, where both teams played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield. As compared to players that started in the Matchday 18 game in the English top-flight football, Arsenal had four replacements, whereas the visiting Liverpool had five changes in this FA Cup Third Round encounter.

Both teams were struggling to find the back of the net for the most part of the FA Cup Third Round clash, until the Reds finally got their breakthrough in the 80th minute, thanks to an own goal by 23-year-old left-back Jakub Kiwior. The defender started ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko, the former Manchester City man who was in the starting lineup when the two English football powerhouses met last month, and failed to clear the freekick set piece delivery by England international Trent Alexander-Arnold, seeing his header end in his own goal in despair.

The home side went on to concede again in the game during the closing stages. Desperate for an equaliser, Arsenal threw too much bodies in Liverpool’s own half, but the effort went to no avail, since the visitors capitalised on their opponents’ imbalanced formation to seal the 2-0 victory. All three players up front for the Kop combined for their second goal of this FA Cup Third Round game, with Darwin Núñez passing to Diogo Jota, followed by the Portuguese’s run towards the penalty box. Jota then set up Luis Díaz for his sixth goal in 25 appearances for Liverpool this 2023/2024 Season, knocking Arsenal out of the competition in this FA Cup Third Round game as a result.

Gunners Winless in Seven Games After Their FA Cup Third Round Defeat

With the 2-0 FA Cup Third Round loss to Liverpool at Emirates, Arsenal suffered their fourth defeat in seven games in all competitions, not to mention they have also drew thrice during the streak, signaling another slump of form for a club who have huge ambitions this year. Liverpool, on the other hand, recorded their fourth win in six games in all tournaments with their 2-0 victory over Arteta’s men in the FA Cup Third Round, having also bagged victories against West Ham United, Burnley and Newcastle United in the EFL Cup Quarterfinal and the English Premier League respectively.

Following the 2-0 result in the FA Cup Third Round, Arsenal and Liverpool are set to take on each other again in less than a month’s time, as the return leg of the English top-tiered football fixture at the same venue yesterday is on the cards early next month. Arsenal would be more than eager to put a halt to their winless streak of late and rediscover the form they had earlier in the 2023/2024 Season before they host Klopp’s Reds again soon.
