How Is 22-Year-Old Controversial Forward Mason Greenwood Doing at Getafe CF Thus Far?

How Is 22-Year-Old Controversial Forward Mason Greenwood Doing at Getafe CF Thus Far?

It is no secret that Manchester United are struggling this 2023/2024 Season, largely due to their inability to score more goals and defend well, which makes many to wonder if there is a need to recall their forgotten man Mason Greenwood back to club some time in the future.

The 22-year-old England international Greenwood was asked to leave the club following the conclusion of his dropped charges of rape and assault allegation, but the series of events that unfolded afterwards saw him being loaned out to Spanish La Liga side Getafe CF last summer. During his time in Spain thus far, the player certainly is not taking the second chance in his professional career for granted, and his statistics might amaze fans, especially those from the United camp.

Greenwood’s Statistics for Getafe CF: Four Goals and Three Assists in 12 Games

In case you have been thinking about how well the loanee from Manchester United is doing at Getafe CF, his performances might came shocking. Despite not played any professional football games for more than 20 months, the 22-year-old Greenwood needed not time to settle into his new life in the Spanish La Liga, racking up a total of 12 appearances in all competitions for the current 10th-placed team in the Spanish top-flight football.

What is more is that Greenwood also contributed a total goal contributions of seven in these games, making him the third best goal scorer in the team behind Spanish duo Borja Mayoral and Juanmi Latasa, who scored 10 and five goals in their 17 appearances for the club respectively.

Since the season has not even reached the half-way line, Greenwood’s development with Getafe CF might see him return to score a double-digit figure of goals by the end of the 2023/2024 Season, where his loan deal is expiring. This prompts a question on whether Manchester United would be recalling the player back under their wings or letting him to leave the 20-time English champions for good.

Does Jim Ratcliffe Want Mason Greenwood Back at United?

The possible return of Greenwood to Old Trafford will largely depend on new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision. The 71-year-old chairman and chief executive officer of the INEOS chemicals group is set to complete his stake at Manchester United, and reports have indicated that he has started the internal discussion on whether the Red Devils should have Greenwood back.

According to the reliable source from famous Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ratcliffe will have the England international’s performance in the Spanish top-flight football as a measuring stick and things will likely be decided around the second quarter of 2024.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is already discussing Greenwood’s situation internally, and from what I’m told, he’s made no decision at all and nothing will be decided in December. So the idea is to take some time and just let Greenwood play football. Then, based on his performances for Getafe, Man Utd will discuss their position and that of the player. This will likely take place in March, April or May. There will be many different factors to consider, and obviously the new Man Utd board will have a new CEO and new people in charge of the transfer market, meaning that they will all decide on transfer business together,” said Romano.
