Antony dos Santos’s Assault Investigation, Sancho’s Fallout with ten Hag and Greenwood’s Loan to Getafe, Things Are Falling Apart for Manchester United in 2023/2024

Antony dos Santos’s Assault Investigation, Sancho’s Fallout with ten Hag and Greenwood’s Loan to Getafe, Things Are Falling Apart for Manchester United in 2023/2024

Several news that broke the internet in recent days such as Antony dos Santos’s ongoing investigations over physical assault and domestic violence claims by his former partner Gabriela Cavallin, Jadon Sancho’s public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag due to poor training performances and limited playing minutes and Mason Greenwood‘s completed loan to Spanish La Liga side Getafe after his dropped heavy charges of a sexual scandal, coupled with Manchester United’s under par performances in 2023/2024 thus far, signal that the Red Devils spectators will not have a quiet first international break of the new season.

Antony dos Santos Dropped by Brazil with Immediate Effect

Earlier in the year, Manchester United’s no. 21 Antony dos Santos was accused of claims for physical assaults and domestic violence over his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin. The allegation was later confirmed by the Brazilian media and reports have indicated that the 23-year-old is now being probed by the São Paulo court over the scandal, much to the dismay of Manchester United spectators, who had just recovered from their devastating last-minute 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Emirates last weekend as well as the Mason Greenwood saga days ago.

Due to the situation, the Brazilian national football team, who is set to face Bolivia and Peru in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers starting this weekend, has issued an official statement to drop the Antony dos Santos for international team consideration with immediate effect. The announcement on the player reads as follows: “In light of the facts which came to light on Monday concerning Manchester United player Antony, which must be investigated, and in order to safeguard the alleged victim, the player, the Brazilian national team and the CBF, the organization informs that the athlete has been removed from the Brazilian national team”.

Antony dos Santos of course has been a regular member for the five-time world champion since making his senior international debut back in 2021. The player with 2 goals in 16 appearances for Brazil over three years decided to take to the internet to stress about his innocence in the allegation by his former partner. “I can say with 100% confidence that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and more to be produced show that I am innocent of the accusations made. I trust the ongoing police investigations will reveal the truth about my innocence”, Antony dos Santos said.

Sancho-ten Hag Feud Brewing

Antony dos Santos is not the only Manchester United right winger who is under the public attention for the wrong reason lately; In fact, three flankers at the right side for the 20-time league winner are all facing a potential career downfall at the moment.

In United’s 3-1 loss against league rivals Gunners, Jadon Sancho was dropped by head coach Erik ten Hag due to poor performances in trainings, with the 53-year-old later confirming the news and saying that “Everyone at Manchester United has to reach the top level every day, whether it is in trainings or matches”. In response to this, The 23-year-old striker publicly slammed the Dutchman for making him the scapegoat in many circumstances in the past and that he had produced decent conduct during training sessions the entire week in his official Twitter (X.com) account.

Sancho, who finally completed his £73-million move to Old Trafford from German Bundesliga 1 back in July 2021, has not been able to replicate his Borussia Dortmund form in his 82 appearances in the famous red shirt. The England international’s dipped form since the 2020 UEFA European Championship and the arrival of Erik ten Hag saw Sancho become a benchwarmer to Antony dos Santos, who is preferred by the 53-year-old Dutch manager. The real reasons behind the feud between the duo are said to be ten Hag’s preference for Antony dos Santos and Sancho’s limited playing minutes.

Greenwood Loaned to Getafe

Apart from Antony dos Santos’s accusations of physical assaults and domestic violence by his former girlfriend, another Manchester United player Mason Greenwood was also plagued with similar charges over the past two years.

After the player had his charges dropped and key witnesses of the case removed, the 13-time Premier League champions conducted an internal investigation that consulted almost every personnel at the club and came to an initial decision that United’s former no. 11 player will leave Manchester United immediately. Nevertheless, the series of events that played out afterwards saw Greenwood being loaned to Spanish La Liga outfit Getafe until the end of the 2023/2024 Season, meaning the England forward is still a Manchester United player, unless there is another club which will be buying him next summer.

What Do These Mean for Manchester United?

With many incoming transfers in the recently closed summer transfer window, many had predicted that Manchester United will be heading towards the 2023/2024 Season with an aim of to capture league, domestic and European cup titles, but recent results and events related to Antony dos Santos, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood have suggested that it is highly likely to witness similar situations in the past few years to appear again for the Red Devils right at the start of this new season.

All these issues also now lead us to one important question: Will Erik ten Hag be able to survive his second year in charge of Manchester United this season, or he will be axed by the infamous Red Devils board in the near and soon future?
