Last 16 Qualification Hopes Alive: Kylian Mbappé Rescue a Point for Paris Saint-Germain at Death Against Newcastle in Group F

Last 16 Qualification Hopes Alive: Kylian Mbappé Rescue a Point for Paris Saint-Germain at Death Against Newcastle in Group F

Paris Saint-Germain’s hopes of qualifying to the knockout round of this 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League Season almost suffered a huge setback when they were down 1-0 against Newcastle United, but Kylian Mbappé once again showed why he is currently one of the best football players in the world, after the 24-year-old France national team captain and the 2022 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner gave the 11-time French Ligue 1 champions a late late equaliser via a penalty in this Matchday 5 fixture of the Group of Death. The game at Parc des Princes would end 1-1, allowing PSG to be second in Group F as a result.

Kylian Mbappé Spoiled Magpies’ Back-to-Back Wins Over PSG

The first leg between both teams from the English and French top-flight football famously ended with Newcastle race to a famous 4-1 victory over PSG at the former’s home back in early October, and the Magpies certainly brought that momentum when they travelled to Parc des Princes for the returning game of this fixture last night.

The Premier League side took the lead in the 24th minute, courtesy of Alexander Isak’s effort. Achraf Hakimi’s poor reverse pass was intercepted by Bruno Guimarães, before the latter orchestrated a Newcastle attack. Miguel Almirón was seen charging towards the PSG goal, and gave Lewis Miley a chance to delivery a cross into the dangerous zone. The 17-year-old’s subsequent effort was below par, but his teammates retrieved the ball and Almirón lashed a solid shot that the gigantic Gianluigi Donnarumma could only repel to the path of Isak’s, who then fired in his first Champions League goal of the season.

The Premier League team looked to have secured their second straight victory over PSG in this match and edged closer to the knockout round of the competition, but the home side fought back with an equaliser with their captain of the night Kylian Mbappé. The 24-year-old Kylian Mbappé levelled things up for PSG when he converted a controversial penalty, after new summer signing Ousmane Dembélé’s pass caught the arm of 21-year-old defender Tino Livramento during the process. The equaliser was Kylian Mbappé’s 17th in 17 appearances in all competitions for PSG, and his effort helped his club to avoid their third defeat in this season’s UEFA Champions League subsequently.

The Million-Dollar Question: Penalty or Not?

Kylian Mbappé may have skippered his team and led them to an important draw against Magpies last night, but questions have been asked on whether the penalty should have be given in the first place. If we take a look at the replay, former Barcelona man Dembélé had his cross hit Livramento’s side body before the ball contacted his arm, meaning the latter had no intention of committing a handball during the attacking play by PSG, and the spot kick, which was converted by Kylian Mbappé for the equaliser to deny Newcastle’s victory, should not be given as agreed by many pundits and commentators.

However, the referee’s ultimate decision to award a penalty to the Kylian Mbappé’-led side raised doubts over refereeing standards and VAR’s existence, as seen recently in the final Matchday 13 game of the Premier League between Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. Rumour also has it that the controversial call is to favour the traditional European club football powerhouses to make it into the next phase of the UEFA Champions League instead of a less popular team like the Magpies.

Dortmund First to Go Through to the Last 16 From Group F

Elsewhere in another Group of Death fixture, Borussia Dortmund secured a place in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League following their 3-1 resounding victory over seven-time winners of the competition AC Milan at San Siro. The win was the Black and Yellows’ third straight triumph in five Matchdays, meaning they have collected a total of 10 points out of a possible 15 during the process, in which the current third- and fourth-placed Magpies and Rossoneri cannot surpass with only a game remaining in the group stage. With the German Bundesliga 1 outfit through to the Last 16 of the continental tournament, the last spot to qualify from Group F will be available to all three teams, where Newcastle United will be hosting AC Milan at St. James’ Park and Kylian Mbappé’s Paris Saint-Germain are set to visit Signal Iduna Park to face the already-qualified Borussia Dortmund a fortnight later.
