Rumour Has It: Is David de Gea Considering a Shocking Move to Newcastle United in 2024 After Nick Pope’s Shoulder Injury?

Rumour Has It: Is David de Gea Considering a Shocking Move to Newcastle United in 2024 After Nick Pope’s Shoulder Injury?

Newcastle United stole the headlines for last week’s English Premier League games when they beat Manchester United 1-0 at St. James’ Park. The 1-0 victory gave the Magpies their third consecutive win in all competitions against the Red Devils, and this is the first time that it has happened since the calendar year of 1922. Nevertheless, while Newcastle United are indulging themselves in the three-game winning streak over Erik ten Hag’s side, they have something to worry about going forward, since their starting goalkeeper Nick Pope is now sidelined due to a shoulder injury he picked up during the Premier League game.

To many people’s amazement, the Magpies might turn to former Red Devil David de Gea as the temporary solution.

What Happened to Nick Pope?

Nick Pope has been Eddie Howe’s preferred choice to guard the goal for Newcastle United since his move to the Magpies back in the 2022/2023 Season. In this season thus far, the 31-year-old England shot stopper featured in 20 matches in all competitions for Newcastle United, but an injury in the Manchester United game at home put a halt to his progress.

During the Matchday 14 fixture at St. James Park, Newcastle United were defending a Luke Shaw corner delivery in the 82nd minute, and the ball was repelled by Joelinton, before substitute Sergio Reguilón lashed a shot towards the Newcastle United goal. Nick Pope attempted to save the ball, only to have the effort blocked and cleared away by his teammates. The 31-year-old was seen struggling to get onto his feet again and signaled for medical assistance, which did not help him to last the full 90 minutes plus added time. Martin Dúbravka was brought on for to replace the England player, and Newcastle United would go on to win the game with Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute strike.

Later the game, it was confirmed that Nick Pope require a surgery to fix his dislocated shoulder, a move that will keep him away from the pitch for a four-month period, serving a huge blow to a side with huge aspirations like Newcastle United. Since the 31-year-old will be unavailable until April 2024, Eddie Howe is now desperately looking for a valuable replacement for goalkeeping duties for Newcastle United, and with Dúbravka’s calibre making him out of the equation at the moment, the 46-year-old is better off beginning his shopping in the winter transfer market.

Is de Gea Open to Join Newcastle United?

A superb option available in the free agent market is of course former no. 1 for the Spain national team and Manchester United David de Gea. The 33-year-old was forced to leave the Red Devils and make way for André Onana last summer after a whopping 12 years years with the club. According to sources, the player is actively looking for a club that is within the top ranks in the European club football industry, and open for a sensational return to the English Premier League by signing for Newcastle United, should the deal come at a reasonable length and wage.

If the move does happen for de Gea to join Newcastle United, it could be an insult to injury to Manchester United, since Newcastle United have recently given the Red Devils their sixth and tenth in the league as well as in all competitions last time around. Ten Hag’s team are only seventh in the league table at the moment, and they are on the verge of being eliminated from any European club football competitions in 2023/2024, having conceded 14 goals in their opening five group matches and sitting at the bottom of Group A with one game remaining.

What Do You Think About de Gea’s Potential Transfer to Newcastle United?

We at OtherLeague.com definitely think it could be a win-win situation for Newcastle United to sign a former Premier League champion and two-time Premier League Golden Glove winner like de Gea to boost their chances of ranking up in domestic and continental club football competitions, and at 33-year-old, the Spaniard also has some prime years remaining in the professional career.

That being said, let us know down in the comment section below about the possible transfer of former United no. 1 de Gea to Newcastle United. We are always looking forward to your thoughts as a source of motivation for us to bring you latest happenings in every major sports of the world!
